Developer Dark Roast Entertainment, took to twitter today to explain why their game, Lucadian Chronicles, is shown as free in the eShop.  The strategic card game is a free download but will have a shortened single player campaign and players will be limited to how many times a day they can draft.  To unlock the entire game, players will need to pay a one time fee of $7.99.  This gives players the chance to get a taste of the game at no cost to them and then if the game catches their attention they can choose to further invest in it.  The game launches in NA December 11 and will offer over 100 cards to collect and evolve.

The base game is free. With the base game you can only draft a limited number of times per day and the single player campaign is shortened.

What do you think of this kind of model for future indie releases? Be sure to let us know in the comments.
