Of all the Legendary and Mythical Pokémon in New Pokémon Snap, Lugia is one of the first Pokémon that really makes you work to even find it. Lugia is easily one of the most annoying Pokémon to get the 4-star photo on as well, since the difficult part is at the end. Plus, if you mess things up, you have to redo the entire process, costing you a few minutes each time. Thankfully, the 4-star Lugia photo requires just a few extra steps beyond finding it, but the picture is easily missable without some practice and a New Pokémon Snap guide like this one. Be sure to get some practice in with throwing Fluffruit, and then continue on to find out how to find this massive beast.
If you have access to Undersea Level 3, head there. Proceed through the level to the boulder alternate path towards the beginning of the course. Head down this path and into the deep sea. Proceed as normal until you get to the major descent about halfway through the course. If you’re looking straight ahead (as defined by the game; press up on the D-pad to verify you’re in the correct orientation), you should notice that the wall in front of you has a few streaks of light on it.
Keep looking just to the bottom right of these streaks, and you’ll soon see a Lanturn appear. Hit it with an Illumina Orb and it will scurry off. Turn around until you find two Frillish hanging out on a cliff. If you’re on Level 3, your vision will soon be blocked by a Wailord. Immediately after your vision clears up, you should see that the two Frillish have trapped the poor Lanturn! Be sure to free it by hitting any member of the trio with another Illumina orb.
Once free, the Lanturn will swim to the ocean floor, will express happiness that you freed it (a good high-star photo of Lanturn can be taken here as well), and then will swim through a cave to the right. Scan the environment to find that this is an alternate path you can take, so follow the Lanturn into the cave. As you proceed forward, keep your focus on the tall pillar in front of you, and as you turn around it, you’ll see Lugia sleeping there. Use Illumina Orbs on the Crystabloom beside it and on the ledge behind it to wake it up. As it leaves its resting place, snap a picture for an easy 3-star photo.
As if all that weren’t enough, however, we still have a little work to do to grab that 4-star Lugia photo. Reorient your perspective by hitting up on the D-pad, and proceed along the path until you turn the corner near the two Golisopod. Off in the distance, you should be able to see Lugia flying in your direction. It might be faint, but you can see it from quite a distance away, giving you time to prepare for what is easily the hardest part of this process. As Lugia flies toward (and over) you, hit it with a Fluffruit. If you were successful in hitting Lugia, you’ll see it spin mid-flight.
As a reminder, if you miss this shot, Lugia will fly away and you’ll miss the opportunity to grab the 4-star photo. Hitting Lugia here though will cause it to circle around and stop above the platform with the Crystabloom on it a little further down the path. Here, Lugia will begin to roar (much as Ho-oh did), and you’ll need to snap a picture here to grab that elusive 4-star shot. You have a little wiggle room to grab the shot, but I still recommend Burst Mode here to make sure you grab it so you don’t have to make that last Fluffruit shot again!
There are nine other Legendary and Mythical Pokémon to find in New Pokémon Snap, so if you’re having trouble with those, be sure to check out our other guides!
