The Art of Super Mario Odyssey Luigi design costume new

Luigi is an iconic character. He usually sports a green shirt and hat along with his blue overalls. This design hasn’t changed hardly at all over the years. But in Super Mario Odyssey, Luigi did appear wearing a green bowtie with some balloons strapped to his back.

While this isn’t the most thrilling costume change in the world, Nintendo did consider changing Luigi’s wardrobe quite a bit. In The Art of Super Mario Odyssey, character art lead Sho Murata explained that the designer put a lot of effort into the character.

Murata explained that they wanted to make Luigi look like he came directly from the Mushroom Kingdom, so his satchel is decked out with stickers that are entirely from there. He even mentioned that one of his stickers is out of circulation. Then he elaborated:

We considered a drastic costume change for Luigi at first, but we ultimately went with a simple look, since it would work well against the background of this game’s world. I wonder… including the Luigi green, did you notice his balloons are the same colors as Super Famicom controller buttons? To the many fans who were looking to his appearance in the game, know that the designer in charge put a lot of effort into Luigi’s development.

What do you guys think? Would you have liked to see Luigi sporting a new look in Super Mario Odyssey? Let us know what you think in the comments!

I love all kinds of video games. I personally find the most enjoyment in JRPGs, Visual Novels, and pretty much anything Nintendo makes. I'm always open to discovering new types of games, so I'll be happy to check out anything someone suggests.
