This is the year of the green boys on Nintendo Switch. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening was the fastest-selling Nintendo game this year. But then Luigi’s Mansion 3 went and unseated it this week. Currently seated behind Call of Duty, Luigi’s Mansion 3 is a solid number 2 on this week’s UK charts.
Christopher Dring broke the news on Sunday, and Twitter user Benji-Sales expanded on what it means. First, Luigi’s Mansion 3 had an extra day over The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Super Mario Maker 2, on account of its being released on Halloween, a Thursday. Second, these figures are only representative of the UK. In other regions, Link’s Awakening still has the title. Finally, it’s not expected that Luigi’s Mansion 3 will remain the fastest-selling game of 2019 once Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield come out. Those are sure to be hot sellers this holiday season, possibly trouncing Link’s Awakening.
Still, it’s impressive that Luigi can take on Link and win under any circumstance. For all the jokes that he’s a second banana, Luigi has a lot of devoted fans, and it doesn’t hurt that his game is amazing. We should probably stop making fun of him. After all, he defeated a seasoned warrior who wields a sword and hangs out with Chain Chomps using nothing but a vacuum cleaner and a ghost puppy.
