Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales

Four years after its release, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales absolutely refuse to slow down. The most successful game on the failed Wii U console got a second shot at life on Switch, and it has dominated the sales charts ever since. Thanks to the latest update from Nintendo, we know the racer recently hit an incredible and rare milestone: over 35 million copies sold worldwide! And that’s just on Switch. If you count the earlier Wii U version, you can add another 8.45 million onto that!

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales hit 35 million

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales currently stand at 35.39 million, and adding in the Wii U version gets you a grand total of 43.84 million. These more exact figures come from Nintendo’s latest briefing to investors, which means the data is current as of March 31, 2021. The previous investor briefing put Deluxe sales at 33.41 million as of December 31, 2020. That means Nintendo sold another 1.98 million copies over the past three months.

Plenty of gas

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales are exactly what we’re talking about when we say something is “Evergreen.” Its fourth year on Switch, and the seventh year overall, was its strongest yet! Check out this breakdown of how Deluxe has sold each (calendar) year, and how it compares to Switch sales.

  • 2017: 7.33 million – Switch sold 14.86 million (49.3% ratio) in 10 months
  • 2018: 7.69 million – Switch sold 17.41 million (44.2% ratio)
  • 2019: 7.94 million – Switch sold 20.21 million (39.3% ratio)
  • 2020: 10.45 million – Switch sold 27.39 million (38.2% ratio)
  • 2021: 1.98 million – Switch sold 4.72 million (41.9% ratio) in three months

As you can see, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales are incredibly consistent over the years. As long as people keep buying Switch, Mario Kart will thrive. If Nintendo is really hoping to sell 30 million consoles this year, Mario Kart should enjoy another strong year.
