Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales surge in UK retail chart thanks to new stock

The UK retail chart for last week shows a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales surge. The game placed second in the chart behind the new PlayStation 4 exclusive Nioh 2. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe‘s sudden increase in sales was caused by new Switch stock hitting store shelves. Since the game is packaged with most console bundles, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe soared to second place in the chart from eighth the week before. Week on week, the game saw a boost of 108 percent.

The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales surge wasn’t the only outstanding moment for the Switch in the chart last week. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX placed third, dropping from the top spot the week before. The game experienced a week-on-week drop in sales of 53 percent. It managed to maintain a place in the top three due to a lack of other big releases in the week, with Nioh 2 being the only true competition.

Further down the chart, Luigi’s Mansion 3 moved up two places to eighth. Conversely, the Switch edition of Minecraft dropped two places to ninth. The full top 10 best-selling games in the UK at retail last week are as follows:

  1. Nioh 2
  2. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  3. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX
  4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
  5. FIFA 20
  6. Grand Theft Auto V
  7. Tom Clancy’s The Division 2
  8. Luigi’s Mansion 3
  9. Minecraft (Switch)
  10. Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

Animal Crossing: New Horizons launches on March 20 this week. We have few doubts that the game will top the UK retail chart ahead of Nioh 2. The combination of boxed unit sales and sales from the limited-edition Switch should be impossible to contend with.

Started out playing Metroid 2 on the GameBoy at around 5 years-old, and now I write about games all day long. Can't play Switch and drive, I've tried. As time goes on the Switch is quickly becoming my favourite console of all time.
