Mario Kart 8 was released for the Wii U in 2014 with sales of 8.45 million units. An enhanced version of the game, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, launched in 2017 for the Switch and has now sold 33.41 million units, as Nintendo revealed with the latest update for its sales figures in a new financial report. This means that Mario Kart 8 in total has sold over 40 million units, making it the bestselling game in the franchise over Mario Kart Wii, which shipped 37.38 million units worldwide.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe dominated the market in 2020, selling roughly 10.45 million copies last year alone. These sales figures are probably a good reason why Nintendo has yet to release a sequel, as Mario Kart 8 continues to thrive. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has until recently been unrivaled as the bestselling Nintendo Switch game, though Animal Crossing: New Horizons is only slightly behind now.
The popularity of Nintendo Switch in comparison to its predecessor, the Wii U, is obviously a major contributing factor towards these high sales. Nintendo’s hybrid console has outsold Nintendo 3DS, and it has nearly overtaken the sales of Game Boy Advance as well. With more software on its way in 2021, Nintendo will surely be able to boost the sales of its system. The console is only halfway through its life cycle, and games such as Mario Kart continue to persuade consumers to buy a Switch.
