Nintendo has to be pretty happy with its all-around sales success lately, especially after a successful Black Friday that saw the Switch, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons enjoy some space in the spotlight. That’s based on some specific sales data out of the UK from this past week. For the week of Black Friday, the Switch took advantage of PS5 and Series S and X stock shortages in the UK and sold plenty of units and software. Switch games accounted for over 38% of all boxed games sold in the UK last week. Notably, physical Switch software sales increased 9% in Black Friday 2020 compared to 2019 – that might not seem like a big jump, but compare it to the industry as a whole, in which physical game sales were 20% lower than Black Friday 2019.
While FIFA 2021 and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War held the top two spots on the game charts, Animal Crossing: New Horizons (at number three overall) and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (at number four) were the best-selling Switch games on the week, but several established titles on the platform enjoyed a major performance boost last week, like Minecraft (number eight), Super Mario 3D All-Stars (number nine), and Just Dance 2021 (which came in at ten, and predominantly sells on Switch). Overall, it was quite a successful week in the UK for major Switch games and the system itself.
