Earlier this week, we reported on how Pokémon McDonald’s Happy Meals are available now with a selection of exclusive Pokémon TCG cards, totaling 50 cards when including standard and foil versions. The problem, it turns out, is that people went immediately berserk buying as many Happy Meals and grabbing as many Pokémon cards as possible, and now there is a shortage of the cards; in fact, egregious scalping of the cards has already begun on eBay. Right now, no one is happy with this meal.
McDonald’s has issued a statement to IGN on the subject though, hoping to resolve the shortage of Pokémon cards and encouraging individual restaurants to limit how many Happy Meals customers can purchase:
We love seeing fans’ passion for our limited-time Happy Meal promotion celebrating 25 years of Pokemon. With such significant demand for our promotional Pokemon TCG cards, and some fans even going to extreme lengths to get them, we’re working quickly to address shortages and also strongly encouraging restaurants to set a reasonable limit on Happy Meals sold per customer. We want to offer the full Happy Meal experience to as many families as possible, and help ensure everyone is able to get in on the fun!
It ultimately sounds like a lot of fluffy PR speak with no real bite behind it. You can likely expect this entire promotion to be a train wreck from start to finish.
