For some time, it has appeared that the only way players could get Mewtwo in Smash is if they buy both Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and for Wii U. Now it seems that this is not the only way you can fight as Mewtwo. Nintendo of Europe has tweeted out that you can get MewTwo by redeeming both versions of Smash Bros. on Club Nintendo, or you will be able to purchase the DLC at a later date. The free download codes for Mewtwo will be distributed in spring 2015. The character will be made available to purchase as add-on content in the future.

This has not yet been confirmed for other regions, but it seems likely that they will follow suit.
