The CGI remake of the first Pokémon film is ramping up promotion with three new commercials. One of the trailers is purely composed of footage directly from Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution while the other two are a mix of crowd excitement and movie clips. You can check out each trailer below, pulled from the official Japanese Pokémon YouTube channel.
The trailers showcase a few iconic moments from the first movie redone in CGI. Many character designs and actions translate over quite well. While not quite a visual spectacle, Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution looks like a fun watch.
Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution released in Japan in July, and it is unknown whether or not it will make it over to other territories. I hope it does. Many have fond memories of the first Pokémon movie, especially those among us who were growing up when the movie is released. I fall into this category myself. In the midst of my first adolescent Pokémon craze, there was nothing quite like settling in for the evening and rewatching one of the early movies starring the little pocket monsters. Alongside Spell of the Unown and Pokémon 4Ever, Mewtwo Strikes Back was one of my favorites.
Still, I do not know if nostalgia alone can ensure that Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution is relevant to me. Our own Zachary Perlmutter recently argued that the first Pokémon movie does not stand too well on its own. Hopefully, the movie will release outside of Japan so that we will all have the opportunity to decide this for ourselves.
