While people may still brush off animation as a childish art form, there’s no denying the impact it’s had on those who consumed it. Though animation certainly has its share of comedic moments, there’s no shortage of mature ideas either. One great example of this comes at the end of Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back, where Mewtwo discusses the nature of one’s birth origins. In fact, this quote is so great, that one high school’s senior class voted to adorn a school wall with that very quote!
Redditor extremebs took to the platform to share an old photo they had dug up of a wall from their high school days. Though a few flowers serve to liven things up a little, the main catch is this Mewtwo quote:
I see now that the circumstances of one’s birth are irrelevant; it is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are.
For those familiar with Mewtwo Strikes Back, you’ll likely recognize this quote immediately. For those who aren’t, this quotes comes from one of the most thought-provoking moments in the entire film. Mewtwo, a clone itself, delivers this line at the conclusion of the clamactic battle between its clone army and the army of original creatures it was formed from. As Mew and Mewtwo float above the post-fight battlefield, Mewtwo (who until moments before was bent on destroying humanity with a clone army) realizes that his perspective on life has been wrong the whole time, then delivers this line to illustrate this shift.
This is an extremely powerful moment of the film, and while the true depth of this quote escaped me as a kid, I’ve since come to appreciate how accurate this statement really is. I’m glad that others do too!
While this quote may be my personal favorite, there are plenty of others throughout the franchise. What other lessons have you learned from Pokémon?
