Revealed alongside the announcement of West of Dead and many other projects at Microsoft’s X019 event today, Minecraft Dungeons will release in April 2020 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Game Pass, and PC. Looking for the specific day? Well, uh, sorry, we don’t have it. The “Release Date Announce Trailer” is kind of a letdown in that regard. But if you’ve made it this far, you can spend another 20 seconds watching the tease for yourself:
Minecraft Dungeons is an action RPG spin-off of the preposterously successful franchise, offering upward of four-player adventuring. There will be options to mold your character into a melee, ranged, or tank role, and the game promises “dozens” of items and weapon enchantments. Your goal is to defeat “the evil Arch-Illager,” which sounds extremely imposing to be sure. The focus of Minecraft Dungeons is very much on vanquishing enemies in a defined adventure, as opposed to the series’s usual focus on building and open-ended exploration.
The original Minecraft found its way to Nintendo Switch in May of 2017, and it’s also available on Wii U and New Nintendo 3DS. Basically, it’s pretty hard to get away from developer Mojang’s baby at this point.
