Nintendo Switch owners are dying to get their hands on Mortal Kombat 11. And NetherRealm Studios is dying to give it to them. However, it seems, NetherRealm is not developing this particular port.
During an interview with GameRevolution, Mortal Kombat 11 producer Trevor Traub revealed some interesting bits of information. He mentions “special geometry reductions” when it comes to making the Switch port work. Likely this means downscaling the graphical fidelity in some fashion. Then there was the bomb revealing that Shiver Studios is actually in charge of the Switch port.
“We’re actually not developing it in house; it’s being developed by Shiver Studios. They’re developing it at the same time as us so it’s sort of a co-development. There is no lead SKU.”
Shiver Studios is largely focused on gaming for mobile, tablet, and PC gaming. Since NetherRealm is largely focused on the home console market, it makes sense they would look for outside help with the Switch version. The fact that they are developing the Xbox One and PS4 versions alongside Shiver’s Switch rendition hopefully means there will be few differences across the board.
The bloody franchise has not graced a Nintendo console since 2007’s Mortal Kombat: Armageddon for Wii. That means Nintendo fans have missed out on the fantastic reboot starting with MK9 and followed by MKX. If this Switch port for MK11 turns out well, then perhaps late ports of the previous titles are in the cards. We will keep our fingers, toes, and all other attached appendages crossed for that possibility.
Mortal Kombat 11 is due for an April 23rd release for Nintendo Switch. It will also be released for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Be sure to check out our preview after the reveal event for more information on this anticipated title.
