Mother Original Soundtrack vinyl release Japan Christmas

Unlike in North America — or probably most of the world — video game music is treated with reverence and may even get its own area in the music section at stores in Japan. As such, they will likely warmly embrace the newly announced Mother Original Soundtrack, a double vinyl analog recording for 5,500 yen. It collects music from Shigesato Itoi’s Mother on Famicom, aka EarthBound Beginnings for NES (which released for the first time on Wii U in 2015), and it will release this Christmas in Japan.

With help from Japanese Nintendo, here is the Mother Original Soundtrack track listing:

[Disc1]
Side A
01? POLLYANNA (I BELIEVE IN YOU)
02? BEIN’ FRIENDS
03? THE PARADISE LINE
04? MAGICANT
Side B
01? WISDOM OF THE WORLD
02? FLYING MAN
03? SNOW MAN
04? ALL THAT I NEEDED (WAS YOU)

[Disc2]
Side C
01? FALLIN’ LOVE, AND
02? EIGHT MELODIES
SideD
01? THE WORLD OF MOTHER?(EXTENDED VERSION)

Music serves a thematic role in the original Mother, and it even plays a role in actual gameplay in Mother 3. Fortunately, the music in this series is pretty stellar in general, making Mother Original Soundtrack a worthwhile purchase regardless.

Shiegsato Itoi recently recounted the story of how he pitched the series to Nintendo — and how Shigeru Miyamoto’s lack of instant enthusiasm for the idea brought Itoi to tears.
