If you’ve ever wanted to crack a murder case while solving Picross puzzles (and really, who hasn’t), Mediatonic has you covered with Murder by Numbers, an soon-to-be-released mystery puzzle title. First announced last October, it was announced earlier today that Murder by Numbers is coming to Switch on March 5th (and PC on March 6th) for $14.99.
Murder by Numbers is set in Hollywood in the mid 1990s. You play as Honor Mizrahi, an actress in a popular detective show. Moments after getting fired, you find yourself in the center of a murder case when your boss winds up dead. You team up with an abandoned surveillance robot named SCOUT in an effort to clear your name.
The gameplay definitely has an Ace Attorney vibe to it. As you examine your surroundings, you’ll occasionally find a piece of evidence. However, that clue won’t be revealed until you solve a Picross puzzle. Once solved, you can then use that evidence to help question other characters and prgoress the case.
If the name Mediatonic rings a bell, it might be because they developed a remake of pigeon dating simulator Hatoful Boyfriend. In fact, Hatoful Boyfriend‘s creator, Hato Moa, is serving as a character designer on Murder by Numbers. Even more talent is being added to the team with Ace Attorney composer Masakazu Sugimori crafting the soundtrack.
I’m incredibly excited to get my hands on Murder by Numbers next month. It’s taking two of my favorite things and mashing them together in what seems like a fun, beautifully-designed world. If you’re as interested in the game as I am, you can pre-order the game starting February 20th at a 10% discount. However, if you’re still on the fence, the discount will last throughout the first week of release, so you have a little time to think about it.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go watch the charming animated introduction that was just published on loop for a few hours.
