Mutant Mudds

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the, well, ultimate celebration of gaming’s many, many icons. Director Masahiro Sakurai has been adamant about representing as many corners of the medium as possible by expanding the already massive roster with exciting characters such as Joker from Persona 5, Terry from King of Fighters, and, of course, Banjo-freaking-Kazooie. Sakurai has managed to share the spotlight with some distinguished indie characters as well, thanks to some hyper-detailed Mii Fighter costumes that add characters like Sans and Cuphead to the game without the need for work on a unique moveset or voice acting. Even with generic movesets, Sans and Cuphead are wonderful additions to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. We will hopefully see a few more indie representatives get the same treatment in the second Fighters Pass. Who would you most like to see?

I’m going with a favorite of mine who got his start on 3DS: Max from Mutant Mudds. I fell in love with the original game when I got hooked on speedrunning the retro-style platformer with the Mutant Mudds Collection on Switch. I think that Max would be a great fit despite being lesser known than other famous indie characters like Shovel Knight and Hollow Knight. Coming from a run and gun platformer, he would pick up the gunner moveset naturally, and he’s a fairly recognizable character who got his start on a Nintendo system.

Which indie character would you like to see as a Mii Fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate? Sound off with your pick in the comments!
