Nadir RPG Kickstarter Nintendo Switch PC dark The Divine Comedy JRPG Shockwork Games

Polish developer Shockwork Games has announced Nadir, a dark RPG inspired by The Divine Comedy, for Nintendo Switch and PC (and possibly PlayStation 4 and Xbox One). The game currently has no launch window, but it will be heading to Kickstarter soon for additional funding. In Nadir, you will control a team of three characters, each representing one of the seven deadly sins, and attempting to escape a “seemingly endless, multi-layered city” created from procedural generation. Apparently, the only way out is to keep descending deeper into the hellish city.

The game’s striking art style — which the teaser trailer below barely shows you any of, strangely — draws influence from Frank Miller’s Sin City, Mike Mignola’s Hellboy, and the works of Sergio Toppi and Tsutomu Nihei. In turn, the game’s “blood-curdling” bosses, the Floor Guardians, will provide a fearsome threat. In addition to standard RPG elements of your team getting stronger and unlocking new abilities, Nadir will feature a Threat Counter during battle, which tells you how much time you have before the enemy turn begins. Shockwork Games explains that each “character’s skill subtracts from the Threat Counter,” but shrewd use of skills can prolong your turn.

As long as you don’t mind procedural generation, which is an instant deal-breaker for some people, Nadir is an RPG to watch out for. Notably, Shockwork describes the game as a JRPG specifically, so it will be interesting to see real gameplay.
