NBA 2K20 mycareer story trailer reveals Idris Elba, Rosario Dawson, Urkel, more

Full disclosure: I haven’t played a sports game since NFL Fever 2004 on Xbox. So it perpetually amazes me to see how sports games are not only developing story modes — but really expensive and in-depth story modes. Today, the “MyCAREER” story mode for NBA 2K20 from Visual Concepts and 2K Sports was shown off at Inside Xbox at Gamescom 2019. And holy cow, what was the budget for this mode?! In association with LeBron James, Maverick Carter, and Springhill Entertainment, NBA 2K20 will star Idris Elba, Rosario Dawson, Thomas Middleditch, Ernie Hudson, Lamorne Morris, and Jaleel White (URKEL!!!!!!!!!).

Check out the amazingly (to me, at least) dramatic “When the Lights Are Brightest” trailer below.

By the look of it, NBA 2K20 is attempting to present an honest-to-God sports movie inside its basketball game with MyCAREER. Part of me is screaming — why? Another part of me is screaming — wow! But far and away, the biggest part of me is literally screaming — Urkel!

What do you make of this trailer? Are you as surprised and blown away as I clearly am, or have you played enough recent sports games for this to be par for the course?

NBA 2K20 will release on Sept. 6 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and it is available for preorder in normal and Legend editions.
