Netflix is going all-in on video game adaptations. With hits like Castlevania and The Witcher in the bag, they recently announced a Resident Evil show, and today they’re back again. This time they’ve teamed up with Ubisoft to bring the long-running Assassin’s Creed franchise to the streaming service as a live-action show. The announcement came via a short and sweet tweet, but Hollywood Reporter has followed up with additional details.
Netflix is making a live-action Assassin’s Creed
The Netflix adaptation of Assassin’s Creed will be “a live-action, genre-bending adaptation of the game.” It’s still in the early stages of development, and no showrunner is currently attached. Ubisoft’s Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik are on board as Executive Producers. Both Altman and Kreinik have worked at Ubisoft’s TV and Film department since 2017, with Altman previously serving as an Executive Producer on Just Dance and as the Head of Production for Ubisoft’s Casual Games department.
Following the reveal, Altman gave the following statement about the upcoming project.
For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the Assassin’s Creed brand into an iconic franchise. We’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.
More Ubisoft team-ups to come?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this live-action show is just the tip of the iceberg. They’re reporting that Ubisoft and Netflix plan to “mine the game’s trove of stories for other live-action, animated and anime series based on the global franchise.” In other words, we could be getting a lot more. You may recall producer Adi Shankar teasing an upcoming Assassin’s Creed anime back in 2017. We haven’t heard anything since then, but it’s possible similar projects could once again be in the works
