During Nintendo’s Direct, Masashi Takahashi from Square Enix revealed some new information regarding Octopath Traveler, including new characters and a release date.

The first new character is Tressa, the merchant. Her special skill grants her the ability to talk to townspeople and collect special items. The second character introduced is named Alfyn, who is an apothecary. His motivation is to heal all those he comes across during his adventure. Players can use his “inquire” skill to find out information from NPCs that other members in your party may not have access to.

A new feature allows players to have the skills from two different jobs (a base occupation and another you can equip later) that will grant them different abilities in combat. The example Takahashi gave in the trailer showed Tressa having the powers of both a merchant and a dancer.

For instance, if another character like the merchant Tressa equips the Dancer job, the combined jobs and abilities expand your strategic options.

Lastly, it was announced that Octopath Traveler will be coming to Switch on July 13th, 2018. There will be a standard edition and a special edition. The special edition includes a soundtrack, a map, a coin resembling those found in the game, and a pop-up book featuring all eight characters.
