In celebration of 20 years of Smash Bros. history, the next online tournament for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will focus on the oldest veterans. The next online tournament will be Super Smash Bros.-themed – and by that, I’m referring to the first game in the series from 1999. Like the Heroes vs Villains tournament earlier this month, there will be a limited roster that features only the original cast. The image in the tweet shows the eight characters available at the start of Smash 64, but it doesn’t tell us if the extra four unlockable characters will be selectable.

Winning matches will let you obtain rare spirits for your collection. Maybe they’ll be based around the Smash 64 cast? Or perhaps, Nintendo will theme them after more obtuse parts of the original game. Either way, the tournament will start on Aug 23 and will last for three days.
This isn’t the only nod to Smash 64 in Ultimate. At first boot of Ultimate, the only selectable characters are the original eight. Along with classic stages and a wide variety of returning music, Ultimate really celebrates its roots.
If this continues as a trend, maybe we’ll end up seeing a Melee, Brawl, or even Smash 4-themed tournaments. What kind of themes would you like to see in the future? SNES only? Girls night out? I could go for a No Swords Allowed tournament myself.
Whatever the case, as a Donkey Kong main, this upcoming tournament is my time to finally shine, and I look forward to seeing some of you in the tournament. Let us know who you’re picking in the comments.
