Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch released for Nintendo Switch back in September, a port of a PlayStation 3 game that was in turn an upgraded version of a Japan-only Nintendo DS game. It, along with Yo-kai Watch and Professor Layton, is a major IP for developer Level-5, and thus Japan received an animated Ni no Kuni film earlier this year. It may not have lit up the Japanese box office, perhaps because it told an original story, but there are still a lot of English-speaking fans who would like to check it out. And soon they can, because the Ni no Kuni film is coming to Netflix in the U.S. on January 16, 2020.

This movie was directed by Yoshiyuki Momose, an animator who has done work for Studio Ghibli, and composed by esteemed longtime Studio Ghibli collaborator Joe Hisaishi. The Ni no Kuni film is about high schoolers Yuu and Haru traveling to another world to apparently rescue Haru’s girlfriend, Kotona. Things get complicated when it is revealed the other world has its own version of Kotona named Asya.
You can watch a couple indecipherable Japanese trailers to whet your appetite, and then a month from now, you can experience the full thing on Netflix.
