Nintendo 64 Classic trademark reveal could revitalize console war

“What year is it?” That’s what Robin Williams, disheveled look and all, famously asked in the 1995 film, Jumanji. It was a pretty hot film at the time. You know what else was hot around that time? The war between Nintendo and Sony! And now signs for the anticipated Nintendo 64 Classic seem to be taking us back to those glory years. What a time to be alive.

A European trademark was revealed with a clear giveaway on what it’s about. Scrolling down to the “graphic representation” will show a very familiar three-pronged controller. The C buttons? Middle joystick?  This is unmistakably a Nintendo 64 controller. Not only that, but the style of the image is very much in line with images used in NES Classic and SNES Classic packaging.

This move could mean that Nintendo is gearing up for an announcement of its 64-bit mini-console soon. It’s not strange to think that an October announcement would lead to a December release in time for the holidays. But you know what else is releasing in December? The PlayStation Classic!

Let the games begin (again)

Aside from being Jumanji‘s release year, 1995 was the year between the release of the PlayStation (1994) and Nintendo 64 (1996). This was an important step for Sony as they were diving into an industry that was dominated by Nintendo.

Getting a jump ahead of “the big N” was a page out of the Sega playbook during the SNES and Genesis era. Sony in this case, however, forged a clear gap in technology by embracing the CD format. Nintendo’s choice to stick with cartridges, coupled with their family-friendly image, gave PlayStation an edge with the 18-29 year old demographic. That and some well-timed raids by a certain bandicoot.

There has been no word yet from Nintendo. Still, this news seems to all but confirm that the Nintendo 64 is making a big (small?) comeback. The fact it also appears to be lining up against Sony’s micro machine is just the icing on the cake. All we can do now is wait and figure out which titles we hope to see. Fingers crossed for Conker’s Bad Fur Day!
