Super Mario Odyssey may potentially rank among the greatest games of all time, but there will always be those who have a hankering for Mario’s 2D outings. There’s no telling what Nintendo is working on behind the scenes, but it’s promising to learn that Nintendo is currently hiring for “new 2D action games” in Tokyo, per Japanese Nintendo.
No specific games or franchises are referenced in the listing, but the job entails creating 2D action games by way of building courses, performing gameplay and bug checks, and other associated activities. Prior work experience in game development is not required, and the hiring will occur with a three-month contract with a built-in renewal period, which seems to be a typical practice for Nintendo.
When we think about Nintendo’s current 2D action game selection (or maybe 2.5D), it includes the likes of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Super Mario Maker 2, Yoshi’s Crafted World, and Rare’s Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Each game and franchise has its champions for assorted reasons, so Nintendo could be choosing to expand upon any number of them — or making something brand new.
Personally, I would love to see a Super Mario World 3 with actual 2D sprite graphics, but I’m not holding my breath for that one. What do you think Nintendo is working on?
