It’s no secret that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was a big reason why the Switch sold well at launch. People just love their Zelda. And Nintendo knows this too. It’s why they’re now apparently working on a new title that will hopefully see its way to Switch.
Some job ads popped up recently on the Japanese Nintendo website that sparked this rumor. A Google translation of the page reveals the word “dungeon” as well as something else more conclusive. The positions listed are as follows:
- 3DCG designer (topography) of “The Legend of Zelda” series
- Level designer of “The Legend of Zelda” series
A Link Between Games
Now all that’s left is wondering what kind of Legend of Zelda project this could be. DLC for Breath of the Wild is a popular thought, although that seems to be a bit late in the game’s life. It could possibly be a remaster of an older title, but job responsibilities seem to indicate creating new assets. That leaves a brand new game on the table.
If this is indeed a brand new Legend of Zelda game, it may be safe to assume that the turnaround will be quicker than with Breath of the Wild. Due to the Switch’s popularity, I’m sure Nintendo will want to strike while the iron’s hot with as many quality titles as possible. The only way to do that is to utilize as much as the groundwork laid out from the previous release.
That’s not to say the next Legend of Zelda will be a Breath of the Wild sequel per se. Each game in the franchise has typically felt wholly original from the last both in visuals and design. But Breath of the Wild struck a chord with gamers. Many have even claimed it’s the best in the series (as have we). Why not keep a good thing going? Perhaps the next title will have similar mechanics but with a fresh coat of paint. Or maybe the visual style will retain. We wouldn’t complain either way.
