If you’re a New Yorker looking to meet your favorite Overwatch voice actors, you may have signed up for the Nintendo NY event scheduled for tomorrow night. But you might want to check your reservations again because the event has been canceled. The event was organized to celebrate the launch of Overwatch: Legendary Edition on the Switch. However, Nintendo has now had to deliver this bad news, and they made it explicitly clear that it was Blizzard who canceled the event.
Gather your team and head to #NintendoNYC Wednesday, 10/16 from 4:30PM – 5:30PM (without reservation) and from 5:30PM – 7PM (reservation required) for Blizzard’s launch event celebrating #Overwatch: Legendary Edition releasing on #NintendoSwitch! pic.twitter.com/uS9fOIESe6

No confirmation has been given on why the Overwatch event was canceled at Nintendo NY, but there’s a lot of speculation floating around. Most notably, Blizzard has been boycotted by fans lately over its treatment of Hearthstone player Ng “Blitzchung” Wai Chung after he expressed solidarity for Hong Kong protesters. The ensuing controversy has exploded over the internet and has since hit mainstream news outlets.
Blizzard may have been expecting some form of protest at tomorrow’s event, or perhaps there is some other logistical reason we just haven’t received information about. It’ll be interesting to see if these controversies affect the sales of Overwatch: Legendary Edition.
Let us know what you think of Blizzard’s cancellation of the Nintendo NY Overwatch launch event.
