It didn\’t take very long for the Big N to respond to all the internet hype surrounding the supposed confirmation that the next console iteration of the Super Smash Bros. franchise was launching certainly next Spring. Nintendo has spoken with IGN, confirming that the original article that made the mention of a Spring 2014 launch has been edited.

There seems to be some buzz online today about the launch date of Super Smash Bros. We would like to clarify that the speculation about a Spring 2014 launch date for Super Smash Bros. on Wii U was the result of a misquotation in an interview. The original article has since been rectified and we have no further announcements to make at this time.

Nintendo of Germany’s general manager Bernd Fakesch, in an interview with Neckar-Chronik, said:

At Christmas we now want to inspire with titles like Wii Party U, Wii Sports Club, Wii Fit U and all of course Super Mario 3D World, the classic Nintendo Family for the new console. For next spring two more big license games are also announced for our TV console with Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros.

Curiously, neither Fakesch’s claim nor Nintendo’s response included Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, the handheld edition expected to arrive alongside the Wii U version.

Both Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS await launch dates and regions. The window of the entirety of 2014 is as close to that information as we can get currently.
