EarthBound Chrono Trigger super nintendo showdown

Welcome back to another edition of Nintendo Showdown! This is a new weekly series at Nintendo Enthusiast, and it requires some audience participation. Every week we’ll compare two (or more) Nintendo games and pit them against each other in a showdown. Your votes decide the winner, so choose wisely. This week we have a matchup between two of the most beloved RPGs on Super Nintendo. It’s EarthBound vs. Chrono Trigger!

RPG Greats: EarthBound and Chrono Trigger

EarthBound is a cult classic that wasn’t appreciated in its time. It doesn’t help that it’s the second game in a trilogy and the West never got the first until decades later. However, these days its widely heralded as one of the best games on Super Nintendo. Its massive world, hilarious dialogue, zany characters and items, and engrossing story have all endeared it in the hearts of gamers. To this day, thousands are crying out for its sequel to release outside of Japan.

Square Enix assembled a “dream team” of developers to create Chrono Trigger, and it shows. It launched to critical acclaim and strong reviews, and its popularity only grew as it was ported to other platforms. There’s a good reason for that! With top-notch graphics, an innovative battle system, and a complex story with multiple endings, it’s a game worth playing over and over.

  1. “Chrono Trigger vs. –”

Stop right there. Chrono Trigger wins.

  2. This is a tough one for me. I love both games so damn much. I feel like I enjoy EarthBound more, but Chrono Trigger has more to offer, if that makes sense. It definitely has more replay value. But Earthbound (and the whole series really) has such a special place in my heart.

  5. I can’t even vote on this, I love both games. Along with Terranigma, they’re my favourite SNES games. I usually rank Terranigma first because CT and EB were originally imports, but now I rank all three tied at #1, with FF6 close behind.

  7. I’ve never gotten the chance to play Chrono Trigger, but I’ve heard nothing but good things. I am an EarthBound fan, though, and I own all three games in some form (Can you say, “custom reproduction GBA carts featuring the English translations for Mother 1+2 and Mother 3”?).

    1. Tomato’s translation for Mother 3 is so spectacular. If Nintendo ever does release an official English Mother 3, I’ll buy it to show my support. But in my book, Tomato’s translation is the official one.
