Welcome back to another edition of Nintendo Showdown! This is a weekly series at Nintendo Enthusiast, and it requires some audience participation. Every week we’ll compare two (or more) Nintendo games and pit them against each other in a showdown. Your votes decide the winner, so choose wisely! In celebration of the upcoming launch of the Link’s Awakening remake, we’re doing a month of Zelda matchups! For the first contest, we’re looking at two other Zelda games that got the remake treatment. It’s Ocarina of Time vs. Majora’s Mask! Which one of these N64 classics (and 3DS remakes) is best? Nintendo Showdown: Zelda Masterpieces
Ocarina of Time
Ocarina of Time transformed the beloved Zelda franchise into a 3D adventure, and it was an incredible success. It featured an interesting story starring memorable characters, revolutionary 3D combat and puzzle-solving, iconic dungeons, and an incredible soundtrack. It set the standard for 3D Zelda games, and for adventure games in general. There’s a good reason it topped so many “Best Games of All Time” lists shortly after its release.
Majora’s Mask left Ganon, Hyrule, and the Triforce all behind. It was a strange, new adventure in the mysterious land of Termina. The constant threat of the moon hovering overhead set the tone for one of the darker Zelda games. The looping three-day cycle and its focus on sidequests made it a truly unique experience. It took risks instead of following the usual template, and that made it a refreshing change of pace.
