Nintendo Showdown Super Metroid vs. Axiom Verge

Welcome back to another edition of Nintendo Showdown! This is a weekly series at Nintendo Enthusiast, and it requires some audience participation. Every week we’ll compare two (or more) Nintendo games and pit them against each other in a poll. Your votes decide the winner, so choose wisely. In the coming weeks, we’ll be matching up Nintendo classics with indie games that drew inspiration from them. Does the original keep the crown, or did a newcomer do it better? First up, it’s Super Metroid vs Axiom Verge!

Nintendo Showdown: Super Metroid vs Axiom Verge

Two incredible Metroidvanias

Super Metroid is so influential that, along with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, it helped popularize a new genre. Its sprawling, open, 2D world full of locked doors and upgrades proved to have a lasting impact. It’s often heralded as one of the best-designed games of all time, and it has inspired countless developers.

Axiom Verge is one of those Metroid-inspired games, but it’s more than just a clone. Its complex sci-fi story, intense boss fights, and massive arsenal of optional weapons all give it a unique feel, despite the obvious homage. It’s a love-letter to the genre that succeeds on its own merits.
