New Super Mario Bros. Nintendo Showdown

Welcome back to another edition of Nintendo Showdown! This is a weekly series at Nintendo Enthusiast, and it requires some audience participation. Every week we’ll compare two (or more) Nintendo games and pit them against each other in a showdown. Your votes decide the winner, so choose wisely. In honor of the launch of Super Mario Maker 2 later this month, we’re taking a tour of the Mario franchise. You voted Super Mario World as the best classic 2D Mario and Super Mario Sunshine as the best 3D Mario. Now it’s time to vote for the best entry in the New Super Mario Bros. series!

Vote for the best New Super Mario Bros. game!

With the rise of 3D gaming, Nintendo stepped away from 2D Mario for quite a few years. This changed in the mid to late 2000s, as Nintendo kicked off a major revival of the 2D formula. Nintendo released New Super Mario Bros. games on DS and Wii, and they combined for over 60 million sales. Cleary there was still a market for the classic formula! The DS version took that popular gameplay on the go, while the Wii version supported multiplayer fun.

Nintendo continued cashing in on the New Super Mario Bros. line during the next generation. New Super Mario Bros. 2 on 3DS added stereoscopic 3D effects and a new Coin Rush mode. Nintendo would then release both Mario and Luigi themed versions on Wii U before eventually combining them into one game on Nintendo Switch. Which one of these platforming adventures is the best? Cast your vote to help us decide, and let us know in the comments!
