9/19 NES SNES Nintendo Switch Online Shadow of the Ninja Eliminator Boat Duel Smash Tennis Pop'n TwinBee

Nintendo Switch Online has an offering of free NES and SNES games! Do you remember those? The library of games gets updated roughly once per eon, and I guess that newest eon is upon us, because new games are finally on the way. On Feb. 19, Shadow of the Ninja and Eliminator Boat Duel from NES will arrive, and Pop’n TwinBee and Smash Tennis from SNES will appear.

Notably, shoot ’em up Pop’n TwinBee and sports game Smash Tennis both released for SNES/Super Famicom in Europe and Japan, but they did not arrive in North America. Players could be in for a genuine treat there, and I suppose Nintendo should be applauded for aiming for novelty in North America instead of just handing us more Nintendo Switch Online games we already own on the SNES Classic.

Meanwhile, action sidescroller Shadow of the Ninja and powerboat racer Eliminator Boat Duel both did release in North America, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to celebrate. I’m, uh, admittedly not up to date on my powerboat racing games, but Shadow of the Ninja was well regarded in its day. It was also a notable influence on the development of upcoming retro ninja platformer Cyber Shadow, whose creator we recently interviewed.

Which of these will you be playing come Feb. 19, assuming you have Nintendo Switch Online?
