As you can see, when it comes to pure performance in games, the Nintendo Wii U outmatches that of its predecessor by miles so to anyone who bought both consoles at or around launch, I would imagine that they\’d be much more pleased with the performance of that of Nintendo’s next-generation home console than that of it’s predecessor on a purely statistical basis. In fact, standing at an impressive 27, the Wii U has the second most retail launch titles out of any video game system, only second to the PS2. Pretty impressive correct? Well, it is, however here’s the problem and why the statistics don\’t reflect reality.

The Wii U is still a Nintendo console so if most of the 27 launch window titles were all thanks to third parties who ported their games over to the Wii U, what’s the public appeal to purchase the console? To the public, so far, the Wii U is a third party box consisting of games already on current generation consoles. Not even, the public wouldn\’t have even known that the Wii U existed because it’s not sporting too many new Nintendo games that allow it to stand out as a next generation console. That’s not to say that the Nintendo fanbase doesn\’t enjoy third party games, but without those killer first party titles, the general Nintendo demographic could care less about what else is on the console and that is where Nintendo fell short on the Wii U and where the Wii started to branch out.

By April, the Wii would have sold over 9.27 million consoles while the Wii U had only done 3.4. Not only did the Wii introduce an entirely new hardware mechanic known as motion controls, by now, the Wii had already released Twilight Princess, Super Paper Mario, and WarioWare: Smooth Moves. That  not even being all, the rest of the 2007 line up of games for the Wii consisted of Super Mario Galaxy, the highest rated game of all time, Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, and other games that sold very well to the public. What does Wii U get for the first 7 months? Old to new multiplatform games with only a couple exclusives that sold well, but that are also not nearly as big as games such as Mario Galaxy. The rest of 2013 looks great for Wii U, but guess what? We\’re only getting a couple great looking exclusives, but the rest are 3rd party games that can be found on other current generation consoles so realistically, the Wii U isn\’t putting up much of a fight and practically gets jabbed in the ribs by the Wii. But you already knew that.

Now it is probably looking like I am trying to put the Wii U to shame, but I am not. To be fair, the Wii set an equitably high bar. When I said the Wii U only had great games, I was downplaying them because compared to the Wii, the Wii U would have to have phenomenal games in order to be a real competitor to the Wii. For the Wii U to even come close to meeting that bar is impressive in of itself so if I could personify this scenario, I would say that compared to the Wii, the Wii U is the lesser successful child of Nintendo and because of this, it satisfies itself by successfully picking on the other kids in the playground, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

Quite surprisingly, the Wii U outpaces both Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 in amount of of quality launch day titles with the only penalty being that the Wii U possess quite a bit of old ports, but even still, you take away the old ports the Wii U launched with and you\’ve still got about at least good 18-20 quality launch day titles available on the Wii U opposed to the 17 quality launch titles available on the Xbox 360 and the 10 available on the PlayStation 3. 5 months later, however (And I say 5 months because we don\’t have console sales for the Wii U past April), how are Wii U’s sales holding up against the HD twins when they launched? Yet again, quite remarkably, Nintendo’s next generation home console manages to not give a hoot about having little to zero system sellers and treads rather close behind the the Xbox 360 (Might have even surpassed considering it’s been 4 months since the latest Wii U console sales report), while sitting atop the Playstation 3, who had only managed to sell 4.32 million.

So really, when it comes down to it, yes, the Wii U is doing terrible by general Wii standards (which are pretty big shoes to fill), but a stretch of the truth is required to say that the Wii U is doing terrible by overall standards. Wii U has definitely shaped itself up to be the console choice of many gaming enthusiasts thus far and If anyone tells you that the Wii U either lacking in games or is doing terrible in sales, as long as they aren\’t speaking in terms of in comparison to the Wii, just direct them to this article to show them reality.
