hardware sales record npd august wii 2008

Nintendo Switch has been thriving all year long as the cooped-up masses turn to games to stave off boredom. People can’t get enough of the hybrid console, and that trend continued in August. Despite a lack of major first-party releases, Switch broke the hardware sales record for the month. That’s the most money generated by a console during the month of August, a record previously set by Wii in 2008.

Nintendo Switch breaks August hardware sales record

This revelation comes from The NPD Group, which tracks monthly hardware and software revenue in the US. NPD’s Mat Piscatella did not list the exact amount of revenue generated by Nintendo Switch, but overall US hardware sales for the month reached $229 million, up 37% from last year. Switch, of course, led the way with its record-breaking month that topped even Wii’s best August.

Although it lacked new exclusives in August, Switch still had numerous games in the top twenty. Animal Crossing, Ring Fit Adventure, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., and Paper Mario all made it into the top ten. Even older titles like Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, and Luigi’s Mansion 3 made the top twenty. Nintendo broke the hardware sales record on the strength of evergreen titles. You can check out the full top twenty list below.
