The January 2020 report from the NPD has been released. This report contains some sales data pulled from the North American game market. As has been the case for several months now, the Nintendo Switch has taken the top spot on the hardware charts. However, it’s victory comes with a bit of humble pie.
While the Switch did prove to outsell the PS4 and Xbox One last month (which makes sense given the age of both consoles and their successors coming soon), its sales performance is actually lower than in January 2019. NPD analyst Mat Piscatella has reported that the Switch “was down in both dollars and units in January”. Furthermore, Piscatella is forecasting “Switch to be down in the single-digit percentages for the year”. The console will hit the middle of its life as of March 2020, which is about the time when hardware sales tend to begin to naturally slow down.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has recently stated that he thinks that the arrival of the PS5 and Xbox Series X will have little to no effect on the sales of Switch going forward. Meanwhile, PS4 and Xbox One numbers have dropped substantially. Even so, both Sony and Microsoft intend to gradually shift focus to their new platforms, so these aging systems will continue to hold a presence in the market for at least the next few years.
