Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent release date Japan October 28 Square Enix iOS Android RPG JRPG mobile not Nintendo Switch

Per Siliconera and Gematsu translation, Square Enix has announced that Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent (also known as Conquerors of the Continent, depending on the translation) will come to Android and iOS mobile devices in Japan on Oct. 28, and preregistration has begun. The game is a free-to-play RPG that functions as a prequel to the original game on Nintendo Switch.

In Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, you will control a party of eight heroes simultaneously in battle, traveling the land of Orsterra together. The villains this time around are the three conquerors that have taken control of Orsterra: Helminia, “Witch of Greed” and Conqueror of Wealth; Titus, “Hero” and Conqueror of Power; and Argust, “Playwright” and Conqueror of Glory.

The original game involved controlling eight protagonists as well, but you could only control four characters at a time in battle in that game. Familiar elements from the first game will return in Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent too, including Break and Boost battle mechanics and Path Actions during travel.

The only thing we don’t know is whether Square Enix will ever localize the game for mobile devices internationally. Given the success of Octopath Traveler on Nintendo Switch, there must be an audience for it. The company has at least expressed interest in the idea.
