Octopath Traveler 2 million copies sold 50% off sale Square Enix

Square Enix released Octopath Traveler on Nintendo Switch on July 13, 2018, and come June 2019, the game arrived on Steam as well. Per a new announcement, we now know that the game has sold a total of 2 million copies, and to celebrate, it’s on sale for 50% off on both the Nintendo Switch eShop and on Steam. The sale lasts till April 2.

Square Enix is known for pushing the limits of graphics with its RPGs, and in a unique way, they did it again with Octopath Traveler, pioneering an innovative new “HD-2D” art style. It’s still the pixel art many (old) people (like me) adore, but with modern lighting and water effects and a “pop-up” presentation. If you appreciate a strong visual aesthetic, this game is worth picking up for that reason alone, especially on sale for $29.99.

Of course, the game isn’t perfect. In our review, I expressed how the game’s narrative — almost all eight of them — are pretty disappointing, and the characters’ stories never come together in an especially impactful or believable way. But if you can forgive that, there’s still a wonderful sense of exploration and unique ways of interacting with NPCs and the environment.

Square Enix is preparing a prequel, Octopath Traveler: Conquerors of the Continent, for mobile devices to release in Japan in 2020. And a sequel for Switch is apparently in the works as well, but no word has come of that title since the first, brief, announcement.
