Square Enix Xbox Game Pass Octopath Traveler Outriders Nier: Automata

Square Enix just might be the most unpredictable developer on Earth, maybe even more so than Nintendo. It hasĀ Balan Wonderworld, SaGa Frontier Remastered, Legend of Mana, and Project Triangle Strategy all on the way to Nintendo Switch, while PlayStation 5 is going to get an upgraded Final Fantasy VII Remake with a new Yuffie episode, and mobile phones are shockingly getting two Final Fantasy VII spin-offs including a battle royale as well. Yet Square Enix’s support of Xbox is evidently the biggest curve ball of all, as Octopath Traveler is headed to Xbox Game Pass for Console and PC on March 25. Plus, Nier: Automata is arriving for Game Pass on PC on March 18, and as previously known, brand new third-person shooter Outriders arrives on Game Pass on Console and Cloud on April 1.

Octopath Traveler originally launched for Nintendo Switch in 2018 and came to PC nearly a year later, and now it will be free to play for anyone who has Xbox Game Pass. It has shipped and sold over 2.5 million units total so far since launch. A mobile prequel to the game exists in Japan, and while a sequel to Octopath Traveler is evidently in development as well, Square Enix has yet to make any announcements about it. It seems likely Nintendo Switch will be its first home in any case.

Regardless, if you’ve never played Octopath Traveler and have Xbox Game Pass, now is the time to indulge. Its story is so-so, which is sadly par for the course for Square Enix these days, but almost everything else is excellent.
