Square Enix released Octopath Traveler three years ago today, and the company shared a celebratory tweet with another sequel teaser. Here’s a translation of the Octopath Traveler 3rd anniversary celebration tweet from Square Enix:
— ???????????? (@OCTOPATH_PR) July 12, 2021
Today, July 13th, is the 3rd anniversary of Octopath Traveler!
Thank you all very much for your warm congratulatory messages!
The development team will work hard so that we can set off on a new adventure with you all!!!
Square Enix previously expressed that it would like to make a sequel to Octopath Traveler but mentioned back in October that a new game for consoles would “take a bit more time.”
Octopath Traveler was originally released as a Nintendo Switch-exclusive RPG in July 2018, characterized by Square Enix’s proprietary “HD-2D” graphical style that combines retro character sprites with modernized environments and effects. Square Enix first used the HD-2D aesthetic for Octopath Traveler, but we’ll see it make a return for the upcoming tactical RPG, Project Triangle Strategy, and the more recently announced Dragon Quest III remake.
Octopath Traveler is immediately available for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. The series has a mobile game prequel called Octopath Traveler: Conquerors of the Continent, but it is currently only available in Japan.
