Despite being nearly two decades old at this point, the Gamecube controller design is still loved by quite a number of gamers today. Some even consider it to be the “perfect” controller. A few months ago, Switch compatibility for the Wii U’s Gamecube Controller Adapter was mysteriously unlocked after a system update. As soon as that happened, there was a frenzy of excited players who were happy to play with the controller again. But, the mood was brought down just a bit due to the controller not having enough buttons to properly function with the Switch, on top of the lack of any rumble. If you’ve wanted a “proper” Gamecube controller experience on Switch, it looks like your desires are about to be fulfilled.
A picture has recently surfaced from Redditer “Mew_The_Creator” showing off the packaging of officially-licensed Gamecube controllers for the Switch from PowerA. The company has already released licensed Switch Pro Controller alternatives that have been well received, so these new GC controllers should also be up to par. Check it out:
This picture shows that the controllers will indeed be wired, which isn’t really a surprise. Also, notice that there are indeed, “-“, “+” and “HOME” buttons along the center. As mentioned before, these buttons are lacking on other GC controllers, including the ZL and ZR buttons (it’s highly likely these controllers have the ZL/ZR buttons, but they simply can’t be seen from the front). So, these new controllers from PowerA look like they’ll be able to be a complete alternative to the Pro Controller and Joy-Cons if you do happen to prefer this design. Nintendo will likely officially announce the new controllers either during or after E3.
