If you’re unfamiliar with Matrix Software’s roguelike RPG Omega Labyrinth Life, I wouldn’t be surprised. But if you are, it’s likely due to its proximity to the ever-ongoing debate about censorship in the industry. If recent sales of the Switch title are any indication, people seem to prefer the uncensored edition, as it outsold its corresponding censored version 3-to-1 in its first week on the market.
Regarding Omega Labyrinth Life, there are two versions of the game on the market, separated by console, and thus the amount of censorship involved in-game. The Switch version follows Nintendo’s recent policy about not censoring third-party titles. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 4 version (simply, Labyrinth Life) follows Sony’s stance on censorship and cuts out a decent bit of the more risque content. This difference in policies not only have led to differences in games released on both systems, but also to calls to boycott the PlayStation versions of these games.
Whether or not these boycotts have actually taken place, the sales numbers don’t lie. Omega Labyrinth Life came 9th in physical sales, moving 6,643 units through August 4th. On the other hand, Labyrinth Life came in 26th with 1,977 units. Both games launched August 1st, so this is an equal period over which to compare these numbers.
As someone who despises the idea of censorship in games, I’m overjoyed with this news! Hopefully this pattern will hold going forward!
