The Metal Gear Solid movie has been gestating in Hollywood for what seems like eons, but now it appears to finally be moving forward at Sony Pictures. Deadline reports that Oscar Isaac will star as the legendary Solid Snake himself, a character made iconic in the video games via the voice acting of David Hayter. Isaac is well-known in pop culture at this point for having portrayed Poe Dameron in the new Star Wars trilogy and Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse, among many other roles. The Metal Gear Solid movie is being directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts with a script by Derek Connolly, and Avi Arad is producing.
Jordan Vogt-Roberts directed Kong: Skull Island, which as far as I’m concerned was a really fun film, and he’s expressed interest in doing a Metroid movie in the past. So the man definitely appreciates nerd culture and understands what makes for fun and exciting filmmaking. Meanwhile, Oscar Isaac is not the first person I would have thought of to play Solid Snake, (Frankly, even at his current age, I’d be fine with David Hayter doing it himself.) but since he has shown appreciable range in his roles, this is likely to work out well.
There is no production schedule for the Metal Gear Solid movie yet, nor does there seem to be a log line. It seems likely that the film will in some way adapt the 1998 PlayStation 1 stealth thriller though.
What do you think of Oscar Isaac as Solid Snake at Sony Pictures?
