Luigi’s Mansion was something of an underappreciated classic on GameCube. Over a decade would pass before it received a sequel on 3DS, re-igniting an eager fan base. After the sequel (and a subsequent 3DS remake) were both well-received, Nintendo finally decided to give the series a big, beautiful HD entry on Switch. Luigi’s Mansion 3 made its debut last Halloween, and a quick look at its sales shows that it’s an instant fan-favorite! With over 5 million copies sold in just two months, it’s already the highest-selling game in franchise history.
Over 5 million sold
The original ghost-hunting adventure sold over 2.5 million copies. Dark Moon, the 3DS sequel, More than doubled that at 5.2 million. However, Luigi’s Mansion 3 has already sold 5.37 million copies in its first two months. This has become a very welcome trend for Nintendo. Quite a few of their AAA first-party games on Switch have broken franchise records in impressive time. Nintendo Switch is a juggernaut right now, and the launch of Switch Lite has provided even more fuel for the fire.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 means a bright future
Nintendo probably never imagined their silly ghost-hunting spin-off game would take off like this. It wasn’t that long ago that Luigi’s Mansion seemed destined to be a one-off game, but that’s all in the past now. Luigi’s Mansion 3 was one of the best games of the year, and the franchise is more popular than ever. It’s starting to feel like a more permanent part of the Nintendo lineup, and that’s great news.
