Overwatch 2 2021 release date missed Diablo IV Activision Blizzard earnings call 2022 maybe

Activision Blizzard announced Overwatch 2 at BlizzCon 2019, which feels like it was ten million eons ago now. It had no release date, but there was speculation it would launch in 2020. Of course, the game did not see release in 2020, but pretty much everyone then expected the game will launch sometime in 2021. Well, that’s apparently not happening either. Activision Blizzard stated on its earnings call today that both Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV are not likely to receive 2021 release dates. Another Call of Duty is apparently on the way for the holidays as usual though.

The fact that Overwatch 2 will likely not see release in 2021 frankly seems bizarre, even factoring in the tremendous setbacks that the pandemic has incurred. When Activision Blizzard first announced the game, the concept sounded solidified already: It will feature a somewhat revolutionary “shared multiplayer experience” with the original Overwatch, where players of the first game and players of the sequel will have access to the exact same multiplayer content. However, Overwatch 2 will have an emphasis on replayable PvE co-op missions to differentiate in it, in addition to improved graphics and new looks for the characters. These details were all shared in 2019, but perhaps something we don’t know about has changed since then.

Overwatch 2 will release on at least Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC — but apparently not in 2021. Likewise, Diablo IV will release for PC — eventually.
