Pac-Man 99

When one classic falls, another shall rise to take its place. Though many are still mourning the loss of Super Mario Bros. 35, the ever hungry Pac-Man has come to save to the day. Starting tomorrow, Nintendo Switch Online members will be able to put their ghost avoiding skills to the test against 98 other players in a winner-take-all battle for supremacy known simply as Pac-Man 99.

In Pac-Man 99, you play the classic maze game, with a multiplayer twist. For the most part, things are the same. You wander the maze, consuming pellets, and avoiding the ghosts. However, in Pac-Man 99, eating the ghosts provides a tangible non-point benefit. For each ghost you eat, you’ll send attacks to your targeted opponents in the form of Jammer Pac-Man. This obstacle will slow you down if you hit it, which could make the difference between life and death if ghosts are nearby. You can also increase the amount of Jammer Pac-Man you send to your opponents by creating ghost trains. These trains attach themselves to the normal ghosts, forming a long line of enemies to avoid. While maneuvering around them might be harder, a well-timed power pellet will allow you to eat them all, allowing you to rain doom on your enemies!

In addition, there are eight different pre-set strategies you can switch between at will to give you an even bigger edge. Four of these, much as with Tetris 99 and Super Mario Bros. 35, allow you to control which of your opponents you target when you attack. The other four, however, can affect thing such as your movement speed or attack strength, providing for even more on-the-fly strategic planning.

Pac-Man 99 is available to pre-load right now for free, though again, you will need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership to actually play the game. In addition, there are a number of optional different content packs you can purchase, including themes based on classic Namco titles ($1.99 each), a pack containing extra modes such as CPU Battle and Score Attack ($14.99), or a bundle with everything for $29.99.
