Panzer Paladin, a retro-style platformer with all of the requisite bits and intense gameplay, stormed onto the eShop today. The game follows a pilot and her mech – and has you play as both – on a quest to expel demonic invaders. If you’ve played the original Shovel Knight campaign, you already have an idea of what the mech gameplay looks like, but throw in about one hundred melee weapons with different powerful effects and you’ll have a clue of what’s waiting for you here. The pilot, meanwhile, is much smaller than her mech and can navigate tight nooks and crannies, as well as environmental puzzles. Check out the launch trailer below (courtesy of Nintendo) to see the game in action and get a glimpse of its in-your-face, high-octane presentation.
There’s no shortage of indie retro love letter platformers nowadays. Plenty of them pay homage to a specific character or series, while Panzer Paladin‘s sword-bouncing gameplay is pretty heavily reminiscent of a less retro platformer: Shovel Knight, an architectural game behind the retro platformer craze that continues to this day. There’s a lot more than just Shovel Knight in there, too – I definitely see some Castlevania in the rest of the mech combat, for example. Needless to say, the game looks awesome.
