Sonic Paramount Pictures is redesigning Sonic the Hedgehog movie because the internet complained so much

Earlier this week Paramount Pictures released the first official trailer for the Sonic movie. The film’s first impression wasn’t strong, to say the least. The overall tone and plot of the trailer received mixed responses from viewers, but the Blue Blur himself was almost universally panned. Sonic is one of the most shared images on the internet right now, but not for good reasons. With his strange, electric fur, surprisingly human teeth, and… whatever those legs are, the poor little guy never stood a chance.

All of this negative feedback has caught the attention of both SEGA and Paramount, and they’re determined to do something about it. Jeff Fowler, the movie’s director, took to Twitter today to promise changes.

Sonic the Hedgehog is scheduled to speed into theaters on November 8 of this year. That leaves the studio just six months to redesign the movie’s main character and replace him in every scene. That’s no easy task. Fowler ended his announcement with “#gottafixfast.” That’s a heck of an understatement.

It’s great to see SEGA and Paramount committed to righting a wrong in the eyes of their fans with Sonic. Hopefully, they supply their teams with the necessary resources to do so without putting them through the type of soul-crushing crunch that has become so common in the video game industry.

  1. Great, now figure out a way to redesign carrey into DeVito and I’ll be there

    1. Carrey can pull off Robotnik. Plus, Eggman is a very tall character, so…

      1. Danny DeVito on stilts would be amazing (Robotnik was mostly legs), but I agree that Jim Carrey would definitely be great for the role.

  2. I’ll believe it when I see it.
This looks good, but I’m not getting my hopes up until I see results.

  3. “because the internet complained so much” Uh those complaints were legit, he looked awful.

  4. Nice thing about modern CGI is that you can just remodel the character leaving all the programmed wireframes and animation tracks still valid. Really all it should take at this point is rebuilding the textures and some of the dimensions then plugging it in to the sequence.

  7. The look of Sonic is the least offensive part of the whole movie but that’s what they are changing. How about actually having the story take place in the setting provided by the game, comics and cartoons. And for the love of the house of Acorn STOP TRYING TO ADD A HUMAN ELEMENT WERE THERE ISN’T ONE! I don’t want to see an actor who hasn’t worked since they killed him of on X-men doing slapstick antics, I want to watch the adventures of the actual character the movie is named after. And I love Jim Carrey but he is not suited to play the Egg Man. And replacing robotised animals with regular tech and using the rings as Dr Strange style teleportation is just stupid gimmicky bullshit from writers who have never picked up anything with sonic on it before now and want to play the “artistic licence” card but don’t have the balls to actually make original content so they latch onto some “adaptation” project and ruin it with all their bad ideas.

    1. The human world has been a part of the series for literally years now. S’weird as it might be for some people, think there’s a little too much denial going on if that’s where they draw the line. Also need to consider what a budget limits them to.

  8. Better yet, get rid of Jimbo, he’s poison.

  9. I was going to see the movie just to see Jim Carrey finally act in a movie again. After Kick-Ass 2 he kind of dropped out of Hollywood and I was afraid we had seen the last of him.

  10. Tbh they should have done some kind of focus test or screening or something. Even if only a portion of the audience were gamers, pretty sure like 75% of them would’ve been like “the blue guy is creepy looking”.

  11. If you think Sonic looks bad, just wait until you see Tails!

  12. I think their biggest mistake was trying to straddle the line between animal and human face. If you must add human elements to a character, you have to make them cartoony enough to avoid the uncanny valley.

    For example:
Peter Rabbit’s design was “animal-y” enough to not be creepy.

Gollum in LOTR had more cartoony and animal-like proportions which were just enough to avoid the uncanny valley problem (but it came dangerously close, some viewers still found it too creepy).

The cartoon characters in Who Framed Rodger Rabbit were cartoony enough to not be creepy.

  13. Turning a funny animal cartoon character into a realistic CGI character is never going to look good.

It is good that Sega and Paramount are going to try to make Sonic the best he can be, and, at the very least fix the aesthetics. However, the best cartoon Sonic has ever been was in the early to mid 1990s and it is unlikely that they are going to match that.

  15. Probably to make him looks more like his video game counterpart. Hollywood did some editing on some of their films while still making and even after “finished” filming the movie before releasing it to the theaters.

  16. I think he’s cute. The real travesty is Jim Carey playing the same character he’s played in every movie.

  17. How about getting rid of jimboy?

  18. It’s a huge start but thats not gonna save it from Jim Carrey and the other actors on how cheesy the acting is in the movie lol you just still cant take the movie seriously everything about it was cringing corny. Was I not the only one embarrassed watching that stupid trailer lol.

    1. I don’t think you’re supposed to take the movie seriously. Certainly the games aren’t.

  20. Its nice how paramount actually responded to the audiance. I think it’s rare to see that these days. But I still think it’s going to be a bad movie overall. Maybe just a little less so with the redesign. But hey! Anything simple to get the kids watching works I guess.

  21. Everyone seems to be complaining about Eggman being cheesy and over the top.

Isn’t that kind of his thing? I saw Jim Carey and I was like, he’s been preparing for this role his entire life.

  22. Jimmy carry’s parts look great, they’re fixing sonic that’s a BIG save, only downfall I’d say Is they’re confusing sonic with the flash or assume he has the time stone, the scene you see in the trailer with the robots shooting rockets at him hes just jumping around turning them back at them that’s dumb, I could see sonic hitting the missile back but not while time is at a stand still
