Sega has announced that Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis will release on June 9, 2021, and it will launch worldwide on the same date. The global version will come to Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, but the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 versions remain exclusive to Japan like the original game.
The reason Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis for Nintendo Switch remains exclusive to Japan is because the base PSO2 game on Switch is a cloud-based version called Phantasy Star Online 2 Cloud that has yet to release in other countries.
While Sega calls New Genesis an updated version, it’s essentially a major overhaul with upgraded graphics and game systems. It also takes place 1,000 years after the original PSO2. However, both PSO2 and PSO2: New Genesis will continue to coexist as standalone titles. Sega will continue to update the two versions.
Phantasy Star Online 2 is available globally on Xbox One and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store. It is available in Japan for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC. The release date of Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is June 9, 2021. Japan will also get a Starter Package edition this August for PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch for 4,490 yen (~$41.55).
