Xbox head Phil Spencer kicked off Microsoft’s showcase at 2020’s online-only Tokyo Game Show with words of respect and praise for the Japanese video game industry. He credited several modern and classic giants in gaming that hail from the country, including Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Persona, and one of Nintendo’s own in Animal Crossing. Check out Phil Spencer’s quote below.
Japan is a creative superpower in this industry with iconic characters and games that are highlights in the gaming histories of hundreds of millions of players across the globe. Yakuza, Metal Gear, Biohazard, Persona, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, and even more recently the phenomenon of Animal Crossing.
Japan and its creators have shaped so much of the magic we expect when it’s time to play a game. The culture and community that has had a profound influence on gaming across the world, on all screens, on Xbox fans and on our team.
Phil Spencer has led Microsoft’s gaming division in embracing the many unique strengths of each major player in the industry. This isn’t even the first time that Phil Spencer has praised Animal Crossing or Nintendo in general – he referred to the company as a “jewel” when he appeared on Gary Whitta’s Animal Crossing talk show back in August. It’s no surprise to see Phil continue showing admiration for Nintendo and the industry as a whole.
This is, of course, a wonderful thing to see. Every major game company could learn a ton from its rivals, so it’s very encouraging for the future of Xbox to see Phil Spencer commending other companies. Stronger, smarter game companies means a stronger games industry, and that’s something I think that we can all get behind.
